'Hurricane Reese' by R.L. Merrill

Hi there,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome along R.L. Merrill with her latest release, Hurricane Reese.

First, here's a little about her:

AUTHOR BIO

Once upon a time... a teacher, tattoo collector, mom, and rock ’n’ roll kinda gal opened up a doc and started purging her demons. Several self-published books and a debut gay romance with Dreamspinner Press later, R.L. Merrill is still striving to find that perfect balance between real life and happily ever after. She writes stories set in the places she loves most, such as Hollywood, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Northern California—and Iowa. Ro also loves connecting with other authors online, at the annual Romantic Times Booklovers Convention, and chapter meetings for the Romance Writers of America, of which she’s been a member since 2014.
A sucker for underdogs, Ro has adopted a wide variety of pets including cats, dogs, rats, a snakeand fish. Her love of horror is evident the moment you walk in her door and find yourself surrounded by decorative skulls and quirky artwork from around the world. You can find her lurking on social media where she loves connecting with readers, educating America’s youth, being a mom taxi to two busy kids, in the tattoo chair trying desperately to get that back piece finished, or head banging at a rock show near her home in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Hurricane Reese

by R.L. Merrill
Blurb:

Tony award-winning musician Reese Matheson’s life resembles a natural disaster, and caregiver Jude De La Torre is caught in the eye of the storm. Can the love these two opposites find together survive caring for an ornery octogenarian with wayward balls and a meddling family insistent upon tradition?
A public break-up is not what Reese expects upon returning from the successful run of his musical in London. All he wants to do is spend time with his beloved grandfather and musical mentor, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. Reese knows he doesn’t have much time left before the elder Matheson doesn’t remember him. In classic “Hurricane Reese” form, he moves into the cottage by the sea, displacing Jude, the intriguing caregiver he’d hired two years before. When Grandpa proves too much for Reese to handle on his own, Jude comes to his rescue, taming Grandpa… and the Hurricane as well. Soon all Reese can think about is how to get Jude out of his scrubs and into his bed. Permanently. Will Hurricane Reese destroy everything in its wake, or will this gay odd couple learn to harmonize together?

Blurb:
Somnus spent his time walking in the dreams of others. He ghosted in and out of their lives, unseen, giving them the magic they needed to dream.

Nightmares were unusually high, so he slipped into one of his favorite charge’s dream. That’s when she saw him. Really saw him. Against all odds and against all the rules, Rachel could see him.
Rachel has something special about her, a lineage that she is unaware of, that not only draws Somnus’ attention, but the nightmare demon as well. Somnus must protect her, even from herself.

Get ready for a wild ride as Rachel and Somnus come to terms with her heritage, the demon, and their shared destiny.

 Excerpt:

Somnus stared at the child sleeping before him. He was a five-year-old with blond hair and blue eyes. The little guy had tossed and turned for an hour before he finally calmed down enough to allow sleep to claim his little body.

Somnus held out his hand and willed his magic to flow from himself to the child. It moved along the air like a cloud of golden glitter, settling on the child’s blond head. The child’s eyes began to move under their lids and a small smile lit the boy’s face. Somnus took a quick peek and saw that the boy was laughing in his dream. He was playing on a playground with other kids, running and climbing like a young boy should be. Somnus had visited the boy enough times to know that the bruises on his delicate skin were not caused by a playground accident. He took some measure of comfort knowing that if only for a short time, he could relieve the boy’s angst from his real life in a dream.

Satisfied with himself, Somnus ghosted to the next person on his list for the night. He liked his job. Giving people the ability to dream was nothing short of a necessary miracle and he did it well. Dreams allowed the mind to make sense of what happened during their waking hours. Long term memories are formed in sleep and sometimes dreams served as a means of relief from the stress of living. Like in the case of the young boy who was beaten daily by his father. Somnus would have throttled that man if he could, but as a demigod, it was forbidden for him to interfere like that. Hell, it was forbidden for him to interfere whatsoever. He could only give the person the ability to dream. Somnus could start the dream in a good place, but ultimately it was up to the dreamer as to where the dream went from where he started it. If he wasn’t aware that it would drive the father insane, he would deny him the ability to dream.  Humans, of all races, needed to dream in order to sort out their thoughts and feelings. To deny one the ability to dream long term would deny their minds the time to regroup. There would be no getting over a bad day. There would be no letting painful emotions go. After a time, the mind would short circuit and the person would go crazy. However, that wouldn’t be helpful to the boy either.

It was pushing three a.m. when Somnus arrived at the home of his most interesting charge. He liked to pretend that he didn’t wait anxiously for the tiny little signal in his brain that told him she had fallen asleep. Her name was Rachel, and every night she took the dream magic he gave her and twisted it into something terrifying. It was no wonder she barely slept, he thought to himself. He wouldn't either if he saw the things she did in dreams.

He stood over her, nothing more than a ghost in his form, watching her breathe. Her short, dark hair spiked up around her face and head in stark contrast to the white pillow case beneath her. She had long black lashes that cast the slightest shadow across her high cheekbones. His gaze followed the lines of her face down her nose to her full red lips. It wasn't bad that he knew that was the natural color of her lips at all. He pretended that he didn't feel a tug of longing in his gut as he looked at her. Somnus wanted all his charges to have good dreams, but this woman was special. Maybe it was because she had so much trouble in that area that he felt the need to help her more than the others. Maybe it was because her ability to conjure some really scary shit in her sleep intrigued him. Or maybe it was because he was a man and she was beautiful. No matter how he tried to dress it up, she was his favorite and he was a little obsessed with her. Okay, he was a lot obsessed with her.
Shaking his head, Somnus allowed his magic to flow. As the golden dream dust settled over her head, Rachel began to dream. I'll just take a quick peek, he thought, before walking into her dream.

Rachel was dancing in a rose garden, surrounded by beauty and wonder. Her eyes shined brightly; the cobalt blue reflecting the light and seeming to shimmer in the sunlight. This was what he wanted for her, Somnus thought. To be happy in her dreams, to have a little bit of peace. He watched from the edge of her subconscious, feeling better about the amount of magic he used on her with each passing minute. When she laughed aloud, the sound was like music to his ears. He had done well.
Just as he turned to leave her, Rachel's dream began to change. Dark storm clouds moved in and cluttered the sky, lightning flashed and Somnus could almost smell the ozone in the air. The entire mood of the dream changed instantly. Rachel looked confused for a moment, but then she changed as well. It was as if she had been expecting this. That was impossible, though. Humans did not have any control in their dreams. Somnus knew he should leave, but he couldn’t. He was completely mesmerized by the way Rachel prepared herself for what she knew was to come. She pulled in a deep breath as if to steel her courage, fisted her hands at her sides, and turned around to face whatever danger had come for her.

The dream did not disappoint. From the dark clouds, a form took shape. It was blurry at first, but as the clouds moved and swirled, a large figure became clear. It stood on two legs and had two arms, but that was where the resemblance to any human ended. On top of its head were two huge curved horns that curled around its head behind its pointed ears. Its skin was the color of hot coals, its eyes black and emotionless. It ran in Rachel’s direction and she screamed.

The thing looked like a demon. It ran after Rachel, snarling and slashing at her with its sharpened claws. Rachel was fast though, and kept just enough ahead of it. The scenery changed from a garden to the inner city, and Somnus watched as Rachel maneuvered through the empty streets. He knew he shouldn’t still be there, but he couldn’t help but watch. His heart pounded in his chest, waiting to see that Rachel made it out of the dream safely.

She rounded the corner of a building and came to an immediate stop right in front of Somnus. “You!” she accused. Somnus looked around to see who she was talking to. “Stop that!” she shrieked. “You know I’m talking to you. You’re always here!”

“What?” Somnus barked out. Surely he was the one dreaming. She couldn’t see him, could she?
Thunderous footsteps followed her and became louder. “We don’t have time for this,” Rachel informed him, grabbing his hand. “We have to run.”

“I don’t think so,” Somnus replied. How the hell was she touching him?

“Whatever,” Rachel told him. “It’s your funeral.” And then, she was gone. Awakened from her dream. Somnus watched as the dream world dissipated, and he was once again standing in Rachel’s bedroom. That was by far the strangest thing he had ever witnessed in the dream world.
“Why are you in my house?” Rachel demanded, sitting up and looking right at him. “You have some explaining to do. Start talking before I call the cops.”

Somnus didn’t know what to think. He was good and properly gobsmacked. This was unprecedented and he was at a complete loss. He was ghosted, but yet, she could see him. That wasn’t supposed to be possible, and yet here she was, staring him down, demanding answers. He had no clue what to say to her, but he had to start somewhere. “Why don’t we start with how the hell you can see me?”

RELEASE DAY INTERVIEW: Best Foot Forward by Bea Stevens

BEST FOOT FORWARD
Bea Stevens

'Always reach for your goals in your highest heels'

Hi there,
Today I'm chatting with Bea Stevens on the release day of her debut chick lit novel, Best Foot Forward.

Here's a little about the book to begin with:

Buy Link: Mybook.to/BestFootForward
Liberty ‘Libby’ Lawrence adores designer labels – even though she can’t afford many. And she especially loves shoes. Her favourites are Christian Louboutins – though not those fake ones Bianca Morrison-Wright gets from the market (the red paint rubs off the soles and everything!)
She’s working as a manager (albeit junior manager) at a London hotel, when the boss announces that there has been a theft from his office. Libby couldn’t help noticing some strange marks on his carpet when she was called in for a reprimand recently (not that it was her fault, or anything) which lead her to surmise who the thief is.
Detective Sergeant James Harper, the hunky policemen who is assigned the case, seems interested in her theory – until she names her number one suspect. Libby is devastated, not only because he doesn’t believe her but – more importantly – that this guy knows NOTHING about shoes!

As Libby struggles to convince the sergeant that her hunch is right, her boss that she’s ready for promotion and herself that she’s not really falling for the gorgeous copper, she realises that maybe she’s wrong about the theft, she’s not suited to the hotel industry and that the handsome hunk is married!

I've got a host of questions to ask, so I'll just wade right in...

Q. What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

A. Best Foot Forward is one of those books that doesn't invoke huge belly-laughs, but keeps you giggling and tittering practically all the way through - at least, with my sense of humour it did. I found that as I was writing some of the scenes I couldn't stop chuckling away to myself (it's a good job I write when I'm alone). Dreaming up funny scenes and cheeky remarks put me in a really good mood and I thoroughly enjoyed writing them. It was also great fun 'researching' shoes and clothes for the book - what woman wouldn't want that job? :)

Q. Where did you get the idea from for the story?

A. I love designer shoes (although, like the main character, Libby, I don't have many). I was perusing the Christian Louboutin website one evening (as you do)and was interested in an article about spotting fake ones. I was really impressed that the company goes to such lengths to try to avoid the circulation of copies of their products, and thought it would be good to weave a story around the problem. I was keen to keep it light-hearted and fun, and I hope I've achieved that.

Q. Tell us about the two main characters.

Libby Lawrence is the heroine of the story and I hope she comes across as a likeable character. She's working as a junior manager in a London hotel, and although she's not too well-suited to the role, she tries her best.
Although she has ambitions, it's not until her best friend and room-mate, Cassie, tells her she's planning to leave soon, that Libby starts to re-evaluate her own future - aided and abetted by her manager's suggestion that perhaps this isn't the right job for her, after all.
Libby gets into some unfortunate (and funny) situations - more due to bad luck than anything else - but her personality shines through and she manages to bounce back most of the time.

Det Sgt James Harper is called in to investigate a theft from the hotel safe. Apart from being devilishly handsome, he appears very serious and unfriendly when he first arrives at the hotel. James is intrigued by Libby, who astonishes him with her mishaps, but he warms to her as the story continues. Later it transpires that his promotion is temporary until he proves himself, and his background accounts for some of his staid manner. Libby further amazes James with her own detective-work, although he has to admit that the Metropolitan Police Force might not be the best career-choice for her!

Q. What has the response been like to your debut chick-lit novel?

A. I was thrilled with a five-star review from the fantastic chick-lit/rom-com novelist, Charlotte Fallowfield, who kindly beta-read the story for me.

rated it
it was amazing
I was lucky enough to beta read this debut chick-lit novel from Bea Stevens, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone that knows me is aware that I rarely award books I read 5 stars, they really have to either move me emotionally, stay with me for days after, or make me cry either tears of laughter, or emotion. So I don't award a coveted 5 star rating often, but I had to for this gem of a British romantic comedy. Stevens has written a totally endearing heroine in Libby and you can't help but will her on to get her HEA with love interest James. With witty banter, classically British humour, and romance aplenty, you'd be forgiven for thinking that this novel follows the traditional route of a romantic comedy. However Stevens has really put some thought into some clever plot devices and twists to keep you guessing throughout, and that's what elevated this read for me. Well written with an easy reading style that just flowed, I simply loved it, and can't wait to read the next book in the series. I urge all chick-lit lovers to give this debut novel a try!
Q. Can we expect more from Libby and James?
A. Yes. Best Foot Forward left us wondering whether it was a happy ending or another misunderstanding, and the next book, Stepping It Up, teases us a little further. I don't want to give anything away, I just hope that readers enjoy the first book enough to continue on Libby's journey (in those gorgeous designer-shoes, of course).

Thanks for being my guest today, Bea, and good luck with your new release. It's been great having your company today, reader, and if you have any comments feel free to leave them below.
Bea would love you to 'like' her page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AuthorBeaStevens/

Wicked Times Two

Series Blurb:

South Florida just got a helluva lot steamier… During the day, the staff at Wicked Brand makes ink dreams a reality for their appreciative clients. After hours, this naughty crew engages in sensual delights as wild as the designs they’re selling. Their motto? Nothing forbidden. Nothing held back.

Wicked Times Two Blurb:

She’s through with love and just wants to have some wicked fun...

Burned by her cheating boyfriend, Jasmina is finished with the idea of forever after with any guy. That fairy tale doesn’t exist—at least not for her. From now on, protecting her heart and letting pleasure rule is her motto.

Lucky for her, she has the perfect men in mind. Noah and Kyle, two of the hottest cops in West Palm Beach. She hasn’t been able to get them out of her head since they handled an altercation at Wicked Brand, the tattoo parlor she manages. When they come back to get inked, sparks fly.

Noah’s ready to play, and Kyle’s on board. All they want is her—submission, bondage, spanking…no strings or regrets. Seductive days roll into steamy nights, igniting feelings the guys hadn’t expected and Jasmina can’t deny.

What began as a sensual adventure could turn into so much more…if Jasmina can risk a different kind of love.

Excerpt - Please note that this is PG rated:

Kyle and Noah strode inside, wearing their cop authority like a second skin.
Jasmina fought dizziness, drawn to them effortlessly and recklessly.
Tor hurried past the guys and reached her first.
She ignored him.
Kyle’s fragrance wafted close, an intoxicating cedar and suede mixture. She struggled against taking another sniff, not wanting him to think she was weird, but it wasn’t easy to restrain her desire. The disillusionment in his eyes had faded, replaced by male interest…almost as if he couldn’t help himself.
Nice.
He smiled at her, the gesture easygoing yet confident.
She liked that.
Noah brought up the rear, his scent tobacco, with a hint of coffee and musk. One thousand percent male, like his assured bearing and attentive gaze.
Ambrosia to a woman who hadn’t had fun in months.
Her cheeks stung. So much for playing things cool. “Hey. What’s up?”
Kyle rubbed his mouth, but it didn’t entirely hide his smile.
Color darkened Noah’s face.
Jasmina had to keep from leaning over the counter to check out the prizes between their legs and asking if they were still seeing the women they’d brought to the wedding. Or maybe they had someone new? She hoped not. “Is everything going okay with the trial? Ethan didn’t bust out of jail, did he?”
Kyle laughed. “Nope.”
Noah chimed in. “He wouldn’t dare.”
Their voices rumbled; her lust spiked to overdrive. Calm down before you make a fool of yourself.
It wasn’t like her to become unglued around guys. She’d always been herself whether they enjoyed her personality or not. Of course, Noah and Kyle were the first men she’d been interested in post-Brad.
Maybe that’s why Tor stood to the side like a chaperone.
She knew she’d been in bad shape after being cheated on, but she didn’t like or need his intrusion and turned to him. “Can I do something for you?”
“I’m good.”
“Awesome.” She slapped on a smile and gestured to the waiting area. “Your client will be glad to hear that. He’s ready to get inked.” She lowered her voice. “He’s the elderly man wearing the bright orange shorts. Nice guy.”
She gave Tor the work order that detailed the tat the man wanted: a 3-D design on his left pec that depicted an opened zipper. From inside his heart, his late wife smiled at him.
The sweetest gesture Jasmina had ever seen. If only all guys were loyal to the ones they were supposed to love.
Wasn’t going to happen, especially to her.
With the forever-after fantasy in her rearview mirror, she was ready to cut loose and enjoy herself. Not once but twice. Wicked times two. She faced Noah and Kyle, attracted to both and eager to know what it would be like to be with them at the same time. A threesome was the safest way she knew to have fun and indulge in her carnal fantasies while also protecting her heart.
However, whether they would go for the idea or think she was crazy was a huge if.
They shot loaded gazes at Tor.
He fired one right back but collected his client.
“Hey, I’m Tor Avana.” He stuck out his hand. “Ward, is it? Nice to meet you.”
“Same here.” They shook. “Hope I’m not too old for this.”
Jasmina cut in. “Not at all. Go for it.” She gave him two thumbs-up.
He laughed softly.
“This way.” Tor gestured for Ward to take a seat in the front chair.
The poor man shrank back. “You’re going to tattoo me in public?”
“Sure.” Tor clamped Ward’s shoulder. “It’ll be fun.”
“Oh no, please.” He waved his hands. “I wouldn’t want anyone except Sheila seeing this old body.” He lifted his droopy shoulders. “She loved me. She didn’t mind how I looked.”
Jasmina’s throat tightened with emotion. “It’s okay. Tor can ink you in his workstation in the back. Totally private.”
Tor gave her a look. She gave him one right back, annoyed at his behavior today.
He ushered Ward down the hall but kept glancing over at her, Kyle, and Noah.
Jasmina recalled when she’d first started to date. A big thing, given she was the youngest in her family, not to mention the only girl with six brothers. Her mom and dad had been pretty cool about the whole thing, trusting their daughter to make the right choices and not to be a pushover for anyone. Her brothers were a different story.
Tor had shot the same look to Noah and Kyle that her brothers had given the guys she’d dated, which said, “Back off.” Until Brad had messed with her heart and dignity, Tor had never questioned her good sense. She knew she’d been hell to live with around here, acting like a damn zombie. But that was in the past. She was ready to move on, and he should trust her to know her own mind. The last thing she needed was a damn bodyguard. She regarded Kyle and Noah. “Something bothering Tor?”
Kyle lifted his eyebrows slightly. A mellow response that told her nothing.
Noah showed no reaction, his mood reserved, thoughts masked, taking her in as though it was his right. Just as a cop would do. Pure authority.
If he behaved the same in bed…
A pleasant thrill ran through her, dulling the outside world. Sounds and colors faded.
For him to play Dom to her sub would be the absolute best. After he worked his wicked ways on her, Kyle would be there for comfort and tenderness. They could even switch things up, taking turns playing good cop and bad. To have their passion released at the same time…
