Still Collecting
I think it’s true to say I
get my ideas and inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. In the case of The Collector, my very first solo work,
the initial idea arrived while sat in the departures lounge of Heathrow airport
awaiting a flight to Aberdeen. One of my oldest friends had just phoned me to
tell me there was an article in that day’s The
Observer newspaper, all about erotic writers. He was adamant the time was
right for me to branch out from short stories to whole a book all of my own.
That happened ages ago now.
So long ago in fact, that as 2016 arrived with far more speed than is polite, I
decided it was high time that my earliest book had an overhaul.
I look back at those first
editions of The Collector with
affection- and horror! I made so many
mistakes- so many words were overused- and on one most regrettable occasion I
would have had to break at least one person’s leg to get them into the position
the story required! What was I thinking????
And how did I not spot that
mistake?
In truth, I suspect I was
carried away by the excitement of it all. There I was, with a string of short
stories out in the world, suddenly being asked to write a complete book. I
thought I’d died and hit heaven. I was so stunned and overjoyed by it all. I
couldn’t believe I was doing a job I loved, that had the added bonus of making
other people happy.
Never did I think I’d still
be writing almost 12 years later!
...and the latest book itself:
Gathering salaciously erotic stories against an everyday backdrop of
bus trips, train journeys, coffee shops, and restaurants, The Collector
documents a wide variety of sexual encounters as she travels Great Britain.
The Collector’s research takes her into every arena of the erotic
experience, from love, lust, submission and dominance, to voyeurism and beyond.
Are you brave enough to see if it was your supposedly private
conversation she overheard - and then wrote down?
***
Not only has my anthology
had a much needed re-edit (no more broken limbs), it also contains two brand
new stories- which I ‘collected’ on a trip to Scotland a couple of years ago-
and a hot new cover.
I admit that, in those early
days of my erotica career, the idea of writing a novel about one set of
characters was rather daunting, although I’ve written a scary amount of erotic
novels and novellas since then. (The
Perfect Submissive Trilogy The Voyeur, Making
Him Wait, A Sticky Situation, The Circus, Digging Deep and Not Her Type etc)
As I sat in the airport that
day, watching people rush around, I began to think about what stories they
would all have to tell if I was brave enough to ask them…
Then I began to listen to
what people were talking about on the chairs around me. I watched how people
behaved, and then I started to write it all down… The Collector was born.
I am so lucky to still be
collecting sexy tales all these years later,
Many thanks for inviting me
